OVERVIEW
From age and various other factors, many people begin to lose significant volume in their cheeks, which creates a gaunt, tired appearance. Irvine plastic surgeon, Dr. Marguertie Bernett, uses Voluma, an advanced dermal injection from the same manufacturer as Juvéderm, to restore volume to the needed areas of the face for up to 2 years. Voluma is a great alternative for patients who don’t want to get cheek augmentation with silicone implants or even before cheek augmentation to help the patient see what they want with temporary Voluma fillers before making a more permanent commitment.
The main ingredient in Voluma, hyaluronic acid (HA), is a synthetic version of the same substance found naturally in the body. HA maintains cell hydration, which keeps the skin elastic and full, As the body’s natural supply of HA decreases, injections of Voluma can restore the skin’s hydration and volume. Voluma can be used on several areas of the face, but it is commonly injected into the hollow areas around the cheeks for a youthful appearance and to decrease wrinkles and creases.
ADMINISTERING VOLUMA
Voluma treatments usually take about 30 minutes, but the time can vary based on the needs and goals of the patient. Voluma is injected using a fine needle that causes most patients initial discomfort, but no pain. However, the patient can request a numbing cream be used before the treatment to increase their comfort. Lidocaine, a local anesthetic, can also be added to the Voluma treatment to numb the treated areas. Patients will be able to see some results immediately, but full results will be revealed after the swelling, discoloration, and tenderness subsides within a few days. Patients can resume normal activities as soon as they feel able, but strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 1 day.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Many patients prefer Voluma over other dermal fillers since it offers the longest lasting results, usually up to 2 years. Dr. Bernett will discuss ways that the patient can care for their face immediately after the treatment and what they can do to prolong their results. Dr. Bernett will also talk to the patient about when to schedule their next injection to maintain their results.
EXPECTED COST
Voluma is a more expensive injectable filler because it uses an advanced formula that lasts longer than most fillers. Voluma lasts an average of 2 years and costs around $1,000 per syringe. A typical patient receives between 2 – 6 syringes of Voluma during their treatment for a total cost of $2,000 – $6,000 per session. The amount of syringes used will vary based on the number of areas being treated, the severity of the wrinkles, and the patient’s cosmetic goals.
